21CHAPTER 5W INDOWS S ETUPW INDOWS P EER - TO -P EERPeer-to-peer printing allows Windows 95/98 computers toprint directly to a networked printer without an interveningfile server. Below are the main features of peer-to-peerprinting.• Runs on Windows 95/98 and workstations or servers“out of the box.”• Runs on networks with or without a NetWare file server.• Implements peer-to-peer direct printing betweenWindows computers and networked printers.• You can configure network printers the same way youconfigure printers directly attached to a computer.note: In isolated, serverless networks, the NIC shouldbe used with its factory default settings.IP vs. IPX Peer-to-Peer PrintingYour network configuration will dictate whether IP or IPX ismore appropriate. However, we recommend you use IP peer-to-peer printing if possible. For IP Peer-to-Peer Printing: You must installPeerToPeer-IP. This protocol allows you to access thenetwork printer over an IP network. The Microsoft TCP/IP protocol stack must also be installed and properlyconfigured on your workstation. The network and thenetwork print servers must support IP.For IPX peer-to-peer Printing: You must installPeerToPeer-IPX. It is not necessary to have a NetWare fileserver on the network to use this protocol.note: If you use IPX peer-to-peer and there is noNetWare server in the network, make sure that theEthernet frame types for both printer and PC match. Donot use “Auto.” The printer’s Ethernet frame type can bechanged in the NetWare Configuration menu. See page19.Installing Peer-to-Peer SoftwareFollow these steps to install the correct software.IP Peer-to-Peer1.
