Taking Photographs—FocusControlling How the Camera Focuses65AutofocusWhen the focus mode selector is set to S (single-servo autofocus) or C (con-tinuous-servo autofocus), the camera focuses automatically when the shut-ter-release button is pressed halfway. This section describes focus optionsthat are only available in single- and continuous-servo AF.AF-Area ModePressing the shutter-release button halfway initiates autofocus. AF-area modedetermines what happens if the subject moves out of the selected focus areawhile the camera is still focusing. Two options are available:14—AE-L/AF-L ( 154)If AF-ON is selected for Custom Setting 14 (AE-L/AF-L), the camera can also be fo-cused by pressing the AE-L/AF-L button.Single-area AFThe camera will focus on the subject in the selected focusarea only. Choose this option when your composition is rel-atively static and you can predict that your subject will stayin the selected focus area.*Dynamic-area AFCamera uses information from multiple focus areas to de-termine focus. If the subject leaves the selected focus areaeven briefly, the camera will still be able to focus based oninformation from other focus areas (the focus area selectedin the viewfinder does not change).
