106 The i ButtonMeteringMetering determines how the camera sets exposure. Thefollowing options are available:The option currently selected isindicated by an icon in the displayduring shooting.Option DescriptionL Matrix meteringThe camera meters a wide area of the frame andsets exposure according to tone distribution, color, composition, and distance for results closeto those seen by the naked eye.M Center-weightedmeteringThe camera meters the entire frame but assignsthe greatest weight to an area in the center of theframe, the size of which can be chosen usingCustom Setting b3 (Center-weighted area). Thisis the classic meter for portraits and is alsorecommended when using filters with anexposure factor (filter factor) over 1×.N Spot meteringThe camera meters a 4 mm circle (equivalent toapproximately 1.5% of the frame) centered on thecurrent focus point, making it possible to meteroff-center subjects (if auto-area AF is in effect, thecamera will instead meter the center focus point).Spot metering ensures that the subject will becorrectly exposed, even when the background ismuch brighter or darker.t Highlight-weightedmeteringThe camera assigns the greatest weight tohighlights. Use this option to reduce loss of detailin highlights, for example when photographingspotlit performers on-stage.
