65Basic SettingsTo enable the electronic shutter andeliminate the noise and vibration causedby operation of the mechanical shutter,select On for Silent photography in thephoto shooting menu.An icon is displayed while silentphotography is in effect. When theshutter is released, the display willbriefly go dark to signal that a photo hasbe taken.Enabling silent photography changes the frame advance ratesfor continuous release modes (0 82) and disables somefeatures, including the flash, beep speaker, long exposure noisereduction, and the electronic front-curtain shutter.Silent PhotographyD Silent PhotographyAlthough the noise of the mechanical shutter is muted, other soundsmay still be audible, for example during autofocus or apertureadjustment or if the G or K button is pressed when an option otherthan Off is selected for Vibration reduction. During silentphotography, flicker, banding, or distortion may be visible in thedisplay and in the final picture under fluorescent, mercury vapor, orsodium lamps or with subjects that are in motion, particularly if thecamera is panned horizontally or an object moves horizontally at highspeed through the frame. Jagged edges, color fringing, moiré, andbright spots may also appear. Bright regions or bands may appear insome areas of the frame with flashing signs and other intermittentlight sources or if the subject is briefly illuminated by a strobe or otherbright, momentary light source.
