Chapter 13 Initializing the system 179BCM200/400 4.0 Installation and Maintenance GuideChapter 13Initializing the systemAfter you start the BCM system, you are ready to set the initial configuration parameters. The initial configuration defines your BCM system to the network. It also gives the system aunique identity and initial parameters. From that point, you can continue with the specificconfigurations for your system, which are described in the BCM 4.0 Administration Guide and theother user guides for each optional application you choose to add to your system.Data parameter requirementsObtain the following parameter values from an Internet service provider (ISP) or corporatenetwork administrator.• initial IP address and netmask for each network interface• primary (and optional secondary) DNS servers• default next-hop router• fractional T1 channel numbers (if you are using fractional TI)• system name• WAN link protocol• frame relay DLCI/CIR (if applicable)• V.90 or V.92 modem settings (North America only)Using the default BCM system IP addressAll BCM systems are shipped with this default address:• IP address: 10.10.10.1• Subnet: 255.255.255.0If you can use the default IP address, you can connect the BCM system to the LAN. This enablesyou to configure the BCM system, through Element Manager, from any PC connected to the LAN.You can also connect to the BCM system using an Ethernet crossover cable (see “Using theEthernet crossover cable” on page 180) or through the serial port (“Connecting through the serialport” on page 181).Warning: Before using the default address on your network, check with your systemadministrator. If this address conflicts with the LAN settings, you can cause networkdamage if you connect to the network without changing the IP address.
