Chapter 5 Advanced IP configuration 157Using the BayStack Instant Internet Management Software Version 7.11Using Instant Internet as a DHCP workstationYou can also configure Instant Internet to be used as a DHCP workstation. However, this functionality is intended to support modems that use the DHCPprotocol to assign dynamic IP addresses. Do not allow the Instant Internet unit toreceive an IP address from an existing DHCP server on the network interfacebecause the client workstations must be configured to use the Instant Internet unitas a gateway and DNS server.Configuring the routing information protocolRouting information protocol (RIP) allows a router to select the best path forsending packets to help speed up data transfer. Every 30 seconds, all routersconfigured to use the RIP technology broadcast a message that contains their owndestination network addresses and the number of hops it takes to get to them (hopcount) as well as the destination network addresses and associated hop count ofany neighboring routers that they have been in contact with. The routers then usethe information gathered from these broadcasts to determine whether or not anetwork is reachable and how far away it is to determine the best route to send apacket.
