Chapter 9 IPX configuration and support 263Using the BayStack Instant Internet Management Software Version 7.1132-bit WinsocksAll 32-bit Winsock applications (those specifically designed for Windows 95,Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000) use the wsock32.dll file. Whenyou start a 32-bit application, it searches for the .dll file in the following order:• Its own application directory (it does not look in memory)• windows\system directory• Search path• All mapped drivesNot every application follows the rules listed above. Some 32-bit applications look only inthe windows\system directory. This is something to keep in mind when you make a decisionabout how to use multiple versions of Winsock.Winsock 1.1 and Winsock 2.0The Install program always installs the Winsock 2.0 client software on Windows98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 workstations. On a Windows 95workstation, the Install program auto-detects what Winsock standard is installedon the workstation. If for some reason this does not happen during installation, you can force the Install program to install the Winsock 2.0-compliant Winsockswith the install.exe /ws2 switch. When you install Instant Internet, you must close all applications (including virusprotection programs) that may be using the Winsock.Using multiple versions of WinsockYou have two options for resolving a Winsock conflict. You can install TCP/IP(for details, refer to “Installing TCP/IP on a Workstation” of Installing theBayStack Instant Internet Management Software Version 7.11), or you can usemultiple versions of Winsock.Note: The Instant Internet 32-bit Winsock 2.0 is named ws2pt.dll.
