Getting started 33Printing the prime patternThe prime pattern is printed to check that the ink cartridges fire properly andto detect any clogged or electrically defective jets.tttt To print the prime pattern1 With the media loaded, press Utility menu2 Select Prime.Testing pattern prints. The test pattern consists of four coloured bands (black,cyan, magenta and yellow), a series of lines and a CMYK header, indicatingthe compensating print modes for damaged jets. (See ‘Compensating forelectrically defective jets’ on page 93.)tttt To interpret the prime testn The bands should be smooth, without dark streaks or white lines. The linesshould not look fuzzy or contain gaps.[18] The upper test pattern of a prime testn Within the printed test pattern, each jet is represented by a short horizontalline. Together, these short horizontal lines form a “stair step” pattern.n Electrically defective jets appear as solid bars for which you can compensate.n Clogged jets appear as gaps or misdirected lines in the “stair step” pattern,which must be cleared manually.n The print modes for which compensation is available are shown above thetest pattern.
