13.9 < Troubleshooting>Background scatter Background scatter results from bits of tonerrandomly distributed on the printed page.• The paper may be too damp. Try printing witha different batch of papers. Do not openpackages of paper until necessary so that thepaper does not absorb too much moisture.• If background scatter occurs on an envelope,change the printing layout to avoid printingover areas that have overlapping seams onthe reverse side. Printing on seams can causeproblems.• If background scatter covers the entire surfacearea of a printed page, adjust the printresolution through your software application orthe printer properties.Misformedcharacters• If characters are improperly formed andproducing hollow images, the paper stock maybe too slick. Try a different paper. See page5.7.• If characters are improperly formed andproducing a wavy effect, the scanner unit mayneed service. For service, contact a servicerepresentative.Page skew • Ensure that the paper is loaded properly.• Check the paper type and quality. Seepage 5.7.• Ensure that the paper or other material isloaded correctly and the guides are not tootight or too loose against the paper stack.Curl or wave • Ensure that the paper is loaded properly.• Check the paper type and quality. Both hightemperature and humidity can cause thepaper to curl. See page 5.7.• Turn over the stack of paper in the tray. See page 12.2.Black pages • The toner cartridge may not be installedproperly. Remove the cartridge and reinsert it.• The toner cartridge may be defective andneed replacing. Remove the toner cartridgeand install a new one. See page 12.4.• The machine may require to be repaired.Contact a service representative.Loose toner • Clean the inside of the machine. Seepage 12.2.• Check the paper type and quality. Seepage 5.7.• Remove the toner cartridge and install a newone. See page 12.4.• If the problem persists, the machine mayrequire repair. Contact a servicerepresentative.Character Voids Character voids are white areas within parts ofcharacters that should be solid black:• If you are using transparencies, try anothertype of transparency. Because of thecomposition of transparencies, somecharacter voids are normal.• You may be printing on the wrong surface ofthe paper.
