222Creating a User ProfileA user profile enables you to install the same set of dataonto multiple Palm OS phones before each phone isindividualised with a specific user name and data file.A phone that is preconfigured with a user profile can begiven to anyone because the PDA phone is not yetidentified by a unique user name. The PDA phoneacquires a unique user name when the new userperforms his or her first local HotSync operation. For example, suppose a sales organisation wants todistribute two dozen phones that all have a commoncompany phone list, a set of memos, and several keyapplications. A user profile can be created to install thecommon data before the PDA phones are distributed tothe employees who will use them. Then when theemployees perform their first HotSync operation, thecommon data becomes part of their individual data file.Note: The PDA pones that are synchronised with a user profilemust be either new ones that have never beensynchronised or phones that have had their user names anddata removed by a hard reset. See page 287.To create a user profile on a Windows computer:1. Open PalmTM Desktop software.2. From the Tools menu, select Users.3. Click Profiles.
