June 2003 IPN: M5000-00-105 Desktop fast charger E - 9Using the fast chargerFast charger indicators are described in TableE-3.Table E-3: Fast charger indicatorsCharging the battery using the fastchargerCharging using the fast charger involves threestages. The fast charge stage quickly brings thebattery up to near its full capacity. Thecharger LED will glow red. The trickle stage slowly tops up the batteryuntil it is at its full capacity, which istypically 1½ hours. The charger LED willflash green. The standby charge stage keeps thebattery at its full capacity, as long as theradio is turned off. The charger LED willglow green. The battery can be charged separately orattached to the radio. The radio must beturned off to ensure a full charge.Turn off the radio and insert the battery/radiointo the charger. If the indicator does not glowred, make sure the battery/radio is seatedproperly and the charger is plugged in correct-ly. If the battery is too hot or too cold, theindicator will remain amber until the batterytemperature is within the safe range forrecharging (5∞C to 40∞C).Approximate charge times are: up to 1½ hours for TOPB100 andTOPB600; up to 2 hours for TOPB200, TOPB400 andTOPB700; and up to 2½ hours for TOPB500.Once the battery has reached approximately90% capacity, the indicator will flash green. Atthis point, it is recommended the battery beleft in the charger for a further 1 to 2 hours, toensure maximum battery charge. Once thebattery is fully charged, the indicator will glowgreen.Avoid leaving charged batteries in thecharger for more than a day.Conditioning the battery with the fastchargerTwo conditioning functions are available onthe fast charger, a short conditioning cycle anda long conditioning cycle. The short cycledischarges the battery then charges it. Regular-ly recharging a battery that has not beencompletely discharged will eventually affect itsability to hold a full charge. For best performance, the battery should beconditioned weekly using the fast charger.Conditioning the battery takes about four toeight hours, depending on how much use it hashad.NoteNoteNoteNote: Do not use the short conditioning cycleon a new battery without first fully charging itusing a long conditioning cycle. The long conditioning cycle is necessary: before the battery is used for the first time; if the battery performance has deteriorat-ed; or after the battery has been stored for longerthan two weeks.Indicator Meaningsteady red battery chargingsteady green battery chargedsteady amber charge suspended until battery tem-perature is within correct rangeflashing red battery not seated properly in thecharger, contacts dirty or batteryfaultyflashing green battery trickle chargingflashing amber battery being long or short condi-tioned, or if flashing amber straightaway, it may indicate a fault such asdirty contacts
