16 Basic OperationPress the monitor key again to reactivate RFsquelch.Muting an External DeviceYour radio may be fitted with the ability to muteanother device, such as a car stereo, so that receivedor transmitted messages are heard.Scanning andVotingGroupsA series of channels may be grouped together sothat the radio can scan through them looking foractivity. When a busy channel is detected in a groupand the signaling is valid (see “What You Hear on aChannel” on page 14), the SCAN indicator flashes,and the radio stops on that channel. The name ofthe captured channel is then displayed, rather thanthe group name, and you can now hear the trans-mission. Scanning resumes when the channel is nolonger busy or the signaling is no longer valid.You may be able to change the channels included inyour group (see “Programmable Scanning and Vot-ing Groups” on page 42).Activating Scan Mode1. Place the microphone on the microphone clip.Note: Your radio may be programmedto scan whenever the microphone is offthe microphone clip. Check with theperson who programmed your radio.2. Select the required group the same way as youselect a channel (see “Selecting a Channel” onpage 11). The group name and SCAN indicatorare shown in the control head display.
