11–Exchanging Data with a ComputerTASCAM DP-004 91You can backup song data on this unit to a computerand restore backed-up song data later. Moreover, you can export track files and master files from asong to a computer and import audio files on thecomputer to the unit.Data transfer always occurs between the unit’s FATpartition and a computer connected by USB to thisunit, so a two-step process is necessary.NOTEThe MTR partitions where song files are stored cannot•be directly accessed from a computer. In this chapter, “computer” refers to a Windows•or Macintosh computer connected to this unit (see“Supported operating systems” on page 92).In this Owner’s Manual, we sometimes refer to the•SD card installed in this unit simply as “this unit” (forexample, “this unit’s FAT partition”).In the same way, we refer to the hard disks and otherdevices that a computer is equipped with collectivelyjust as a “computer” (for example, “transfer to thecomputer”).The FAT partition has three directories (folders):BACKUP, WAVE and UTILITY.NOTEDo not erase or change the names of these directo-•ries. The functions explained in this chapter will notwork if you do so.The UTILITY directory is used to, for example, update•the system software used by the unit. Please see theinstructions included with the software update forhow to update. The following types of data can be transferred fromthis unit to a computer.Entire songsYou can transfer the data for an entire song fromthe unit’s BACKUP directory on the FAT partitionto a computer. This operation is called “backup.”In addition, data backed-up on a computer canbe transferred to the BACKUP directory on theFAT partition, and then restored as song data. Thisoperation is called “restore.”WAV format tracksOne or more tracks can be converted to WAV filesand exported to a computer, and WAV files (one ata time) on a computer can be imported to this unit. These WAV files are stored on the WAVE directoryof this unit’s FAT partition.
