TASCAM DP-008 45monitoring volume.Use the PAN knobs to set the stereopositions (between the left and rightspeakers) of each track signal.NOTEThe PAN and LEVEL knobs of each trackcontrol that track’s playback output signalor monitored input signal. They do notcontrol the signal being recorded to thetrack.If you are not satisfied with the recorded• sound, follow the procedures above againfrom the beginning.Press the• Ô/ keys to rewind/fastforward (like a tape recorder). Press andhold these keys to increase the rewind/fastforward speed. Press the stop (ª) key tostop.Multitrack recordingYou can record new sounds to different trackswhile playing back already recorded tracks.REC indicator settingsTurn OFF the• REC indicators of alreadyrecorded tracks.Press the• REC key on the track that youwant to overdub to put it into record stand-by (REC indicator blinking).Track pan and level settingsUse the LEVEL and PAN knobs of alreadyrecorded tracks to adjust their level and stereopositions for monitoring during overdubbing.Input selection and assignmentUse the procedures described earlier in thischapter to assign input sources to tracks forrecording.Input level settingsWhen finished making settings, press theplayback (Á) key to start playback.Just as though you were recording, you canmonitor the sound of already recorded tracksplaying back and the input source on thetrack for recording, allowing you to check themonitor balance and volume.Making additional recordingsPress the playback (Á) key while pressingand holding the record (–) key.This allows you to create a new recording on adifferent track while listening to the sound oftracks playing back.MixdownAdjusting the volumes and stereo positions ofthe recorded tracks to create a well-balancestereo mix is called mixdown.Level and balanceUse the TRACK 1–8 LEVEL knobs to adjustthe relative balance between tracks. Use theMASTER LEVEL knob to adjust the overalllevel. Watching the L/R meters at the right ofthe display, adjust the level until it is suitable.If the volume is too loud, the sound will bedistorted.NOTEThe track meters on the Home Screen showthe recorded signal levels on the tracks.Therefore, these meters do not change evenwhen the LEVEL knobs are adjusted.TIPYou do not need to keep the entire song atthe same volume. For example, you couldgradually increase the volume during aguitar solo.Stereo position (panning)Using the PAN knob for a track, you can adjustthe track signal’s stereo position.Track EQ (equalizer)Each track has a 2-band equalizer (EQ).6 – Basic Recording
