ENGINE OPERATIONTNV Operation Manual 55COLD START DEVICE• The Cold Start Device on direct injectionmodels improves engine starting at lowertemperatures.• If the engine cooling system temperature isbelow 41°F (5°C), the Cold Start Deviceautomatically advances the fuel injection timingand slightly increases the fuel injection volume.• The engine idle speed will be slightly elevatedfor approximately the first 5 minutes ofoperation.• When the Cold Start Device is activated, youmay notice a slight increase in the amount ofexhaust smoke, this is normal.• NEVER engage the transmission or PTO whilethe Cold Start Device is activated orunexpected movement of the machine mayresult.CHECKING THE ENGINEDURING OPERATIONA WARNING0000006enSUDDEN MOVEMENT HAZARD!• Allow the engine to warm-up for atleast 5 minutes to allow the engine idlespeed to return to normal beforeengaging the transmission or any PTOattachments. Engaging thetransmission or PTO at an elevatedengine speed could result in anunexpected movement of theequipment.• Failure to comply could result in deathor serious injury.CAUTION0000010enMake sure the engine is installed on alevel surface. If a continuously runningengine is installed at an angle greaterthan 30° (in any direction) or if an engineruns for short periods of time (less than3 minutes) at an angle greater than 35°(in any direction) engine oil may enterthe combustion chamber causingexessive engine speed and generatewhite smoke. This may cause seriousengine damage.CAUTION0000011enNew Engine Break In:• On the initial engine start-up, allow theengine to idle for approximately 15minutes while you check for properengine oil pressure, diesel fuel leaks, engine oil leaks, coolant leaks, and forproper operation of the indicatorsand / or gauges.• During the first hour of operation, varythe engine speed and load on theengine. Short periods of maximumengine speed and load are desirable.Avoid prolonged operation atminimum or maximum engine speedsand loads for the next 4 to 5 hours.• During the break-in period, carefullyobserve the engine oil pressure andengine temperature.• During the break-in period, check theengine oil and coolant levelsfrequently.CAUTION0000012enNEVER engage the starter motor whilethe engine is running. This may damagethe starter motor pinion and / or ringgear.
