Chapter 9: Monitoring Status and Activity ● 103Monitoring OptionsAdaptec Storage Manager provides many ways to monitor the status of your storage space:● Event Log—The main window of Adaptec Storage Manager features an event log thatprovides at-a-glance status information about activity occurring in your storage space.(See the following section.)● Event Status Icons—Three basic icons (information, warning, and error) appear in theevent log and in the main Adaptec Storage Manager window to help you quickly identifyproblems. (See page 104.)● Enclosure Status Icons—If your storage space includes an enclosure with an enclosuremanagement device, three icons appear in the Physical Devices View to help you monitortemperature, fan, and power module status. (See page 105.)● Notifications—You can set Adaptec Storage Manager to broadcast status notifications inyour choice of format to help you monitor these activities on local and remote systems (seepages 106–117):● Progress of scheduled tasks, such as logical drive verifications.● Changes in the status of the physical components of your storage space, such as disk drives.● Changes to the local system, such as the expansion of a logical drive or the creation ofa hot spare.● Statistics Logging—You can set Adaptec Storage Manager to collect I/O and usagestatistics for the RAID controllers in your system and periodically “call home” to send thedata to Adaptec or other contacts for analysis. (See page 119.)● Properties Button—You can check the status of any component in your storage space byusing the Properties button. (See Viewing Component Properties on page 87.)● Audible Alarm—A series of beeps sounds whenever a serious event occurs on your storagespace. (See Maintaining Physical Devices on page 86.)Checking Status from the Main WindowFrom your local system, you can see status information and messages about the activity (orevents) occurring in your storage space by looking at the event log and status icons in the mainwindow of Adaptec Storage Manager. (You can also view all events for a system in its operatingsystem event log—see page 118.) You can also monitor any enclosure with an enclosuremanagement device from the main window.Viewing Activity and Status in the Event LogThe event log lists activity occurring in your storage space, with the most recent event listed atthe top. Status is indicated by icons (see page 104) in the left-hand column, as shown in thefigure on page 104.Double-click any event to open the Configuration Event Detail window to see moreinformation in an easier-to-read format. Use the up and down arrows to view previous orfollowing events.
