12 GlossaryAAutomatic ResetThe safety input device control operation setting where theassigned safety output will automatically turn on when all of itsassociated input devices are in the Run state.CChange of State (COS)The change of an input signal when it switches from Run-to-Stopor Stop-to-Run state.Closed-Open Debounce TimeTime to bridge a jittery input signal or bouncing of input contactsto prevent nuisance tripping of the Controller. Adjustable from 6ms to 100 ms. The default value is 6 ms (50 ms for mutesensors).Complementary ContactsTwo sets of contacts which are always in opposite states.ConcurrentThe setting that permits an indefinite signal disparity betweenchannels, without going into a fault condition.DDesignated PersonA person or persons identified and designated in writing, by theemployer, as being appropriately trained and qualified to performa specified checkout procedure.Diverse-RedundancyThe practice of using components, circuitry or operation ofdifferent designs, architectures or functions to achieveredundancy and to reduce the possibility of common modefailures.Dual-ChannelHaving redundant signal lines for each safety input or safetyoutput.FFaultA state of a device characterized by the inability to perform arequired function, excluding the inability during preventivemaintenance or other planned actions, or due to lack of externalresources. A fault is often the result of a failure of the deviceitself, but may exist without prior failure.HHard (Fixed) GuardScreens, bars, or other mechanical barriers affixed to the frame ofthe machine intended to prevent entry by personnel into thehazardous area(s) of a machine, while allowing the point ofoperation to be viewed. The maximum size of the openings isdetermined by the applicable standard, such as Table O-10 ofOSHA 29CFR1910.217, also called a "fixed barrier guard."MMachine Response TimeThe time between the activation of a machine stopping device andthe instant when the dangerous parts of the machine reach a safestate by being brought to rest.Manual resetThe safety input device control operation setting where theassigned safety output will turn On only after a manual reset isperformed and if the other associated input devices are in theirRun state.OOff SignalThe safety output signal that results when at least one of itsassociated input device signals changes to the Stop state.
