Hub Redundancy ManagementSetting Redundant CircuitsConfiguration Views Cabletron Ethernet Hubs4-24 Management Module Guidewhen you were sending direct deposit payroll information from the PayrollDepartment to the Accounting Department the night before payday. Thiscould be a disastrous situation.Redundant circuit management would prevent this situation by allowing theprimary hub device to automatically switch from the primary circuit to thesecondary circuit. The backup circuit would become active and continuesending data over its cable connection. Redundancy becomes especiallyimportant for unattended night time batch jobs, or for jobs where acommunications problem could seriously interfere with normal businessoperations.Setting Redundant CircuitsThe following procedure uses an IRM2 hub device as an example. However, this procedure can also be used with MRXI and MiniMMAC hubs as primarydevices. The secondary device can be any hub device with redundancycapability (e.g., MRXI, MiniMMAC, IRM2, IRM3). This procedure may also beused to configure multiple secondary hub devices. To set redundant circuits for the devices modeled in SPECTRUM, follow thesesteps:1. Click on the icon to select it.2. If contact has been established and the icon is green, bring up theConfiguration View.3. From the Configuration View menu, click on the Redundancy button. Inthe Redundancy View window, click on Redundancy Table.NOTEThese instructions assume that you have a primary MMAC hub module portphysically attached to a secondary MMAC hub module port. Both thesemodules must have redundant circuit capability. The backup port connectioncannot be completed until you have set up the active connection inSPECTRUM. For convenience, you should also prepare a list of secondary hubEthernet addresses before beginning this procedure. Also, SNMP devices require the use of the Community Name attribute. TheSPECTRUM default of “public” grants read-only privileges, which allow youto view device attributes, but not modify them. Since setting up redundancyrequires modifying the device attributes, you should set the Community Nameto “ctron,” which grants read/write privileges. You can set the CommunityName when you create the device or change it in the Device ConfigurationView.
