6 - 6 Quick Check® 600/800 Series User’s GuideThe following table lists some characteristics of the nine bar code symbologiesdecoded by the Quick Check 600/800 Verifier. How a Bar Code Verifier WorksA bar code reader or scanner extracts the information that is optically encodedin a bar code symbol and converts it into computer-compatible digital data.Hand Held Products provides a variety of handheld wand or pen scanners withthe verifier that are designed to minimize scratching the symbol. When you placethe wand on a bar code symbol and move it across the symbol, electro-opticaltechniques read the symbol. All wands contain a light emitting diode (eithervisible or infrared light) which illuminates the symbol. The area of the symbol that is actually being scanned at any given time isreferred to as the “spot” and is defined by an aperture. The spot size variesdepending on which wand is used. The spot is formed by flooding the symbolwith light. A tightly focused aperture collects the light. The light reflected fromthe spot is directed to a photodiode detector which generates a small currentSymbology Character SetElementwidthsUPCEANCodabar/USS CodabarCode 39Code 11Interleaved 2 of 5Code 16KCode 128Code 49Code 93MSI Codenumericnumericnumeric with 6 special char-actersalphanumeric, 26 uppercaseletters, 10 digits, 7 specialcharactersnumeric and ---numericalphanumeric with all func-tion codes and special char-acters (full ASCII set)alphanumeric with all func-tion codes and special char-acters (full ASCII set)alphanumeric (all 128 ASCIcharacters)alphanumeric (all 128 ASCIcharacters)numeric4 widths4 widths2 widths2 widths3 widths2 widths2 widths4 widths6 widths(stacked symbol-ogy)4 widths4 widths
