To select the direct digitalinput, press the LD button 7c andhold it for three seconds. This means thataudio signals will remain in their puredigital state until after all surroundprocessing or after the (only) D/Aconversion in Stereo mode has takenplace.NOTE: This connection is for standardtwo channel 44.1 kHz PCM digital audio,as provided by LD or CD machines. It isNOT an input for multichannel digitalaudio signals such AC-3 or DTS. Improperconnection to the wrong type of digitaloutput may cause damage to the AVR80or other components in your audio systemand are not covered by the AVR80warranty. Consult your dealer or installerif you have any questions about this input.6 Channel Direct OperationSince 1993, an increasing number oftheatrical motion pictures have beenrecorded with digital sound tracks.With these new processes such as DolbySurround Digital™(AC-3), DTS® andSony’s SDDS®, five or more discrete soundchannels are available along with adedicated subwoofer channel for lowfrequency sounds. The replacement ofanalog matrix theatrical audio, such asDolby Stereo with these new systems hasgreatly increased the enjoyment of moviesound.Advances in electronics technology nowmake it possible to bring these discretedigital audio soundtracks into yourhome. Many of today’s new LD playersand an increasing number of LD moviereleases provide for Dolby AC-3 Digitalsoundtracks. In the future, highdefinition television (HDTV) broadcastswill also carry multichannel digital audioinformation.To prevent your AVR80 fromobsolescence, special jacks are providedfor use with external multichannel audioadapters.If an adapter is installed in your system,connect its six analog audio outputs tothe 6-CH DIRECT INPUT jacks ø onthe AVR80’s rear panel.When listening to programs usingan external adapter, press the 6-CHDIRECT button Ô on the front panel.All surround processing will be disabledwhen 6 Channel Direct is in use, asnone is required with discrete audiosignals.
