The following lights are provided for monitoring adapter status:v Power-on lights for hot-plug PCI-X slotsv Internal attention lights for hot-plug PCI-X slotsIf the operating system supports hot-plug PCI/PCI-X adapters, you can replace afailing hot-plug PCI/PCI-X adapter with a new adapter of the same type withoutturning off power to the server. If the operating system and adapter also support thehot-add feature, you can install a new adapter without turning off the power to theserver.Attention: Do not remove a hot-plug PCI/PCI-X adapter before determiningwhether the operating system requires you to disable the hot-plug PCI-X slot thatcontains the adapter. Failing to disable the slot in this situation might cause theserver to lock up. Refer to the operating-system documentation.Adapter considerationsBefore you install adapters, review the following:v Locate the documentation that comes with the adapter and follow thoseinstructions in addition to the instructions in this chapter. If you need to changeswitch settings or jumper settings on the adapter, follow the instructions thatcome with the adapter.v Locate the documentation that comes with your operating system. If theoperating system provides a way to disable or enable a PCI-X slot you will needthis documentation.v If you install a ServeRAID adapter for use with the internal hot-swap hard diskdrives, you must connect the internal channel cable between the adapter and theSCSI RAID cable connector (J43) on the system board. However, if you do this, you cannot install a full-length, wide adapter in PCI-X slot 1.v The server supports only 3.3 V PCI or PCI-X adapters.v The server uses a rotational interrupt technique to configure PCI/PCI-X adapters. You can use this technique to install PCI/PCI-X adapters that currently do notsupport sharing of PCI interrupts.v PCI-X slots 3 through 6 are on PCI bus A; PCI-X slots 1 and 2 are on PCI bus B.v By default, the server starts (boots) devices in the following order: system IDEand SCSI devices, then PCI/PCI-X devices.Note: To change the startup order, start the Configuration/Setup Utility programand select Start Options from the main menu. Then, select the StartupSequence Options.Hot-plug PCI/PCI-X adapter installationThis section describes how to install a hot-plug PCI/PCI-X adapter. Before youcontinue with the adapter-installation procedure, note that all six PCI-X slots supporthot-plug, 64-bit, PCI/PCI-X adapters. If PCI/PCI-X adapters are installed in bothslots 1 and 2, they operate at 100 MHz or less, depending on the capacity of theadapter. If one adapter is installed in slot 1 and slot 2 is empty, the adapter in slot 1can operate at 133 MHz.74 Hardware Maintenance Manual: xSeries 360 Type 8686
