What the MAX5 offersThe IBM MAX5 for System x (MAX5) memory expansion module provides severalfeatures for easy operation, including the following features:v Customer replaceable units (CRUs)The major CRUs in the MAX5 expansion module are memory modules, fans, and power supplies. See “MAX5 components” on page 117 for the supportedMAX5 components.v Light path diagnostics LEDsThe MAX5 expansion module has light path LEDs (front and rear) to indicatehardware, scaling, and power problems.v Redundant cooling and power capabilitiesThe MAX5 expansion module supports a maximum of two 675-watt hot-swappower supplies and five single-motor hot-swap fans, which providesredundancy and hot-swap capability. The redundant cooling by the fans enablescontinued operation if one fan fails. The MAX5 comes with one 675-watthot-swap power supply and five fans. If a problem occurs with one of the powersupplies, the other power supply can meet the power requirements.v Large memory capacityThe memory bus supports up to 512 GB of memory. The memory controllersupports error correcting code (ECC) for up to 32 industry-standard 1066 MHzPC3-10600R-999 or 1333 MHz PC3-8500, DDR3 (third-generationdouble-data-rate), registered, synchronous dynamic random access memory(SDRAM) dual inline memory modules (DIMMs).MAX5 reliability, availability, and serviceability featuresThree of the most important features in product design are reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS). These factors help to ensure that the integrity of the dataprocessed in your MAX5 memory expansion module is preserved, that theexpansion module is available when you want to use it, and should a failure occur, you can easily diagnose and repair the failure with minimal inconvenience. The following is an abbreviated list of the RAS features that the expansion modulesupports:v 1-year parts and 1-year labor limited warranty or it assumes the warranty of thex3690 server when attached, whichever is longer.v Chipkill memory protectionv Hot-swap and redundant cooling with fan-speed-sensing capability (frontserviceability)v Hot-swap and redundant power supplies (rear serviceability)v Information LED panelv In-rack serviceabilityv Memory redundant bit steering (RBS) and error correcting code (ECC)v Memory mirroring support (mirrored DIMMs are mutually exclusive of eachother)v QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) fail downv Rear serviceability power supplies28 System x3690 X5 Types 7147, 7148, 7149, and 7192: Installation and User's Guide
