v Remove the device from its package and install it directly into the server withoutsetting down the device. If it is necessary to set down the device, put it back intoits static-protective package. Do not place the device on the server cover or on ametal surface.v Take additional care when you handle devices during cold weather. Heatingreduces indoor humidity and increases static electricity.Removing the server coverImportant: Before you install optional hardware devices, make sure that the serveris working correctly. Start the server, and make sure that the operating systemstarts. If the server is not working correctly, see "Solving Problems" in theInstallation Guide for diagnostic information.To remove the server cover, complete the following steps:1. Read the safety information that begins on page v and “Installation guidelines”on page 20.2. If you are planning to install or remove a memory module, PCI adapter, battery,or other non-hot-swap optional device, turn off the server and all attacheddevices and disconnect all external cables and power cords (see “Turning offthe server” on page 12).3. Press down on the left and right side latches and pull the server out of the rackenclosure until both slide rails lock.Note: You can reach the cables on the back of the server when the server is inthe locked position.4. Loosen the thumbscrew that secures the cover at the back of the server.5.
