Installing a hard disk driveThe following notes describe the type of hard disk drives that the server supportsand other information that you must consider when you install a hard disk drive. Fora list of supported hard disk drives, see http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/.Attention: To avoid damage to the hard disk drive connectors, make sure that thecover is in place and fully closed whenever you install or remove a hard disk drive.Locate the documentation that comes with the hard disk drive and follow thoseinstructions in addition to the instructions in this chapter. The server supports one of the following hard disk drive configurations:v Do not use both SAS and SATA drives in the same array.v The 2.5-inch server models support four hot-swap SAS hard disk drives. You caninstall only 2.5-inch hot-swap SAS drives in these servers.v The 3.5-inch server models support two hot-swap SAS or hot-swap SATA harddisk drives. You can install only 3.5-inch hot-swap SAS or hot-swap SATA drivesin these serversv The simple-swap server models support two 3.5-inch simple-swap SATA harddisk drives. You can install only 3.5-inch simple-swap SATA drives in theseservers.v All hot-swap drives in the server should have the same throughput speed rating.Using hard disk drives with different speed ratings will cause all drives to operateat the throughput speed of the slowest drive.Installing a hot-swap hard disk driveTo install a 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SAS hard disk drive, complete the following steps.Note: If you have only one hard disk drive, you must install it in the upper-left bay.The following illustration shows the 2.5-inch hard disk drive server model.Drive-tray assemblyDrive handleFiller panelSAS hard diskdrive backplaneThe following illustration shows the 3.5-inch hard disk drive server model.26 IBM System x3350 Types 4192 and 4193: User’s Guide
