v If you install a second pair of DIMMs in the DIMM 2 and DIMM 4 connectors, they do not have to be the same size, speed, type, and technology as theDIMMs in the DIMM 1 and DIMM 3 connectors. However, the size, speed, type, and technology of the DIMMs that you install in the DIMM 2 and DIMM 4connectors must match each other.v The server can operate in single channel mode or dual channel mode.v DIMM population is based on single-rank, double-rank, or mix single-rank anddouble-rank DIMMs. DIMMs must be installed in order, starting with the DIMMconnector that is farthest from the memory controller hub. Double-rank DIMMsmust be installed in the DIMM connector that is farthest from the memorycontroller hub when you install a combination of single-rank and double-rankDIMMs. The following tables show examples of populating the server withdifferent combinations of single-rank and double-rank DIMMs.Table 4. When you restart the server, the system displays a message thatindicates that the memory configuration has changed. The following illustration shows the dual inline memory module (DIMM) connectorson the system board. To install a DIMM, complete the following steps:1. Read the safety information that begins on page v and “Installation guidelines”on page 20.2. Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect all the power cordsand external cables. Remove the cover (see “Removing the server cover” onpage 23).Attention: To avoid breaking the retaining clips or damaging the DIMMconnectors, open and close the clips gently.3. Open the retaining clip on each end of the DIMM connector.32 IBM System x3350 Types 4192 and 4193: User’s Guide
