Installing your operating system without using ServerGuideIf you have already configured the server hardware and you are not using theServerGuide program to install your operating system, complete the following stepsto download the latest operating-system installation instructions from the IBM Website.Note: Changes are made periodically to the IBM Web site. The actual proceduremight vary slightly from what is described in this document.1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.2. Under Product support, click System x.3. From the menu on the left side of the page, click System x support search.4. From the Task menu, select Install.5. From the Product family menu, select System x3350.6. From the Operating system menu, select your operating system, and then clickSearch to display the available installation documents.Using the LSI Logic Configuration Utility programUse the LSI Logic Configuration Utility program to configure and manage redundantarray of independent disks (RAID) arrays of hot-swap disk drives. Be sure to usethis program as described in this document.Important: If the server is a simple-swap SATA model and you have installed anoptional SATA RAID Kit, you can use the LSI Logic Configuration Utility program toconfigure the simple-swap SATA hard disk drives.Use the LSI Logic Configuration Utility program to perform the following tasks:v Perform a low-level format of a SAS/SATA hard disk drivev Create an array of SAS/SATA hard disk drives with or without a hot-spare drivev Set SAS/SATA protocol parameters on SAS/SATA hard disk drives. In addition, you can download an LSI command-line configuration program fromhttp://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.When you use the LSI Logic Configuration Utility program to configure and managearrays, consider the following information:v The integrated SAS/SATA controller with RAID capabilities supports the followingfeatures:– Integrated Mirroring (IM) with hot-spare (also known as RAID 1)Use this option to create an integrated array of two disks plus an optional hotspare. All data on the primary disk can be migrated.– Integrated Mirroring Enhanced (IME) with hot-spare support (also known asRAID 1E)Use this option to create an integrated mirror enhanced array of three to eightdisks, including an optional hot spare– Integrated Striping (IS) (also known as RAID 0)Use this option to create an integrated striping array of two to eight disks. Alldata on the array disk will be deleted.v Hard disk drive capacities affect how you create arrays. The drives in an arraycan have different capacities, but the RAID controller treats them as if they allhave the capacity of the smallest hard disk drive.Chapter 3. Configuring the server 51
