Reference SectionE45MeteringThe process of measuring the brightness of the subject to determine theexposure is known as “metering.”Use this option to set the method of how the camera meters exposure.1 When Focus-coupled metering is set to On and AF area mode (E49) is set toManual, the brightness of the subject is measured by giving higher priority to thefocus area. See “Focus-coupled Metering” (E58) for more information.2 Can be used with focus lock (A85) to meter off-center subjects.B Notes About Metering• When digital zoom is in effect, Center-weighted or Spot is selected dependingon the magnification of an enlargement.• The setting may not be changed when using certain settings of other functions.C Display on the Shooting Screen• When Center-weighted or Spot is selected, the metering range guide (A16) isdisplayed (except when digital zoom is used).• When Focus-coupled metering is set to On, the metering range guide forSpot is not displayed.Rotate the mode dial to A, B, C, D, E, F or N M d button M A,B, C or D tab (A13) M MeteringOption DescriptionG Matrix 1(default setting)The camera uses a wide area of the screen for metering.Recommended for typical shooting.q Center-weightedThe camera meters the entire frame but assigns greatestweight to the subject in the center of the frame. Theclassic metering for portraits; it preserves backgrounddetails while letting lighting conditions in the center ofthe frame determine exposure.2r Spot 1The camera meters the area shown by the circle in thecenter of the frame. This can be used when the subjectis much lighter or darker than the background. Ensurethat the subject is within the area shown by the circlewhen shooting. 2
