Phone services and external devices517NoteWe recommend beginning your OGM withan initial 5 second silence because themachine cannot hear fax tones over a loudvoice. You may try leaving out this pause, but if your machine has trouble receiving, then you should re-record the OGM toinclude it.Special line considerations 7Roll over phone lines 7A roll over phone system is a group of two ormore separate telephone lines that passincoming calls to each other if they are busy. The calls are usually passed down or “rolledover” to the next available phone line in apreset order.Your machine can work in a roll over systemas long as it is the last number in thesequence, so the call cannot roll away. Do notput the machine on any of the other numbers;when the other lines are busy and a secondfax call is received, the fax call would betransferred to a line that does not have a faxmachine. Your machine will work best on adedicated line.Two-line phone system 7A two-line phone system is nothing more thantwo separate phone numbers on the samewall outlet. The two phone numbers can beon separate jacks (RJ11) or combined intoone jack (RJ14). Your machine must beplugged into an RJ11 jack. RJ11 and RJ14jacks may be equal in size and appearanceand both may contain four wires (black, red, green, yellow). To test the type of jack, plug in a two-line phone and see if it canaccess both lines. If it can, you must separatethe line for your machine. (See Ext. Tel. RXon page 43.)Converting telephone wall outlets 7There are three ways to convert to an RJ11jack. The first two ways may requireassistance from the telephone company. Youcan change the wall outlets from one RJ14jack to two RJ11 jacks. Or, you can have anRJ11 wall outlet installed and slave or jumpone of the phone numbers to it.The third way is the easiest: Buy a triplexadapter. You can plug a triplex adapter intoan RJ14 outlet. It separates the wires into twoseparate RJ11 jacks (Line 1, Line 2) and athird RJ14 jack (Lines 1 and 2). If yourmachine is on Line 1, plug the machine intoL1 of the triplex adapter. If your machine is onLine 2, plug it into L2 of the triple adapter.Installing machine, external two-lineTAM and two-line telephone 7When you are installing an external two-linetelephone answering machine (TAM) and atwo-line telephone, your machine must beisolated on one line at both the wall jack andat the TAM. The most common connection isto put the machine on Line 2, which isexplained in the following steps. The back ofthe two-line TAM must have two telephonejacks: one labeled L1 or L1/L2, and the otherlabeled L2. You will need at least threetelephone line cords, the one that came withyour machine and two for your external two-line TAM. You will need a fourth line cord ifyou add a two-line telephone.Place the two-line TAM and the two-linetelephone next to your machine.RJ14RJ11RJ14
