15Part A: FilterTec Plus Hardware1.0 Overview:The FilterTec Plus is a DEF laboratory-scale filtration system that automates filterability studiesand dead end filtration processes. In DEF, process solution is pumped through a filtrationdevice, typically a 47mm diameter disk filter or something larger, having a user-selectedporosity. In contrast to older, less efficient DEF procedures, Parker’s new “Pmaintain” Alarmmethod automates direct flow filtration (DFF) of dilute protein solutions while providing a 35-50%* increase in filter utilization and filtration yield. (*process solution dependant)Parker’s new “Pmaintain” Alarm method consists of the following steps: Initially, a user-definedconstant pump rate is implemented in Constant Rate Mode until a user-defined pressure limit isreached. At this point, the fluid handling system automatically switches to a constant pressuredelivery, i.e. modulating the pump output until a user-defined lower filtration flow limit (collectionrate) is reached and the pump automatically stops. The FilterTec Plus system provides ease of use and operational safety: Several userdefinable alarm conditions can be continuously monitored and displayed. The user defined alarms include: High Pressure Alarm to monitor filterplug-up conditions, the Pmaintain Alarm ispart of this Alarm menu, will change theunit from Constant Rate to ConstantPressure at a user-defined limit. Low Pressure Alarm to monitor systemleakage. Low Flow Alarm to monitor filter plug-upconditions. Used along with Pmaintain inHigh Pressure Alarm to terminate thefiltration process. Hi Temperature to monitor thetemperature of your solution. Cumulative Volume Alarm to monitortotal volume based on the feed rate. Filtrate Weight Alarm to quantitativelymeasure the filtrate yield. Run Time Alarm that stops the pumpaction when a user defined filtration timehas elapsed. Hi and Low Analog Alarms allow you tomonitor inputs from other devices tocontrol your process. (pH, conductivity orturbidity sensors, etc.)All alarms provide an auditory signal; the pump stops when user defined alarm limits areexceeded. Alternatively, any alarm can be selectively disabled. All pump filtration, as well asalarm parameters can be printed out at user defined time intervals with a Parker serial printer.Alternatively, all of the collected data can be sent to a supervisory computer for data archivingusing SciDoc or HyperTerminal. The Masterflex Easy-Load II peristaltic pump heads can accommodate PharMed and Platinum-cured Silicone pump tubing, including sizes 13, 14, 16, 25, & 17. If equipped with the lagermodel, sizes 15, 24 & 35 can be accommodated. Feed rates for all pump tube sizes are factorycalibrated; however, the user can easily recalibrate with a single keystroke from the FilterTecPlus front panel. The pump head delivers flow rates ranging from 0.03 ml / min. to 2200 ml /min. for each of the two pump channels depending on motor rpm.NOTE: The FilterTec Plus usually is configured with a 160-rpm motor. However, if your flow rateneeds require, the FilterTec Plus is available with either a 600-rpm or 8-rpm motor. In Setup:Pump: Motor: Rpm, select the RPM of your installed motor. By doing so, the FilterTec Plus willselect the appropriate factory installed calibration curves and flow rates.
