en-7212 QUALITY OF CUTIt is recommended that a “test cut” be performed toevaluate the mower’s performance before beginningrepairs. An area should be available where “test cuts” can bemade. This area should provide known and consistentturf conditions to allow accurate evaluation of themower’s performance.Another “test cut” should be performed after the com-pletion of the repairs and/or adjustments to verify themower’s performance. Before performing a “test cut” to diagnose cut appear-ance and mower performance, the following itemsshould be verified to ensure an accurate “test cut.”1. Mowing (Ground) Speed2. Blade Sharpness3. Height-of-Cut (HOC)4. Roller and Roller Bearing Condition5. Blade Speed12.1 WASHBOARDINGNOTE: Arrow indicates direction of travel.Washboarding is a cyclical pattern of varying cuttingheights, resulting in a wave-like cut appearance. Inmost cases, the wave tip-to-tip distance is approxi-mately6—8 in. (15—20 cm). Colour variation (light-to-dark)may also be noticed. This condition is usually caused by a rocking motionin the cutting unit(s). This condition is found mostlyon mowers with multiple (suspended) cutting units, but other causes can produce the same result.Washboarding may also be caused by variations inthe turf.Probable Cause RemedyMowing (ground) speed is too fast. Reduce mowing (ground) speed.Grass build-up on roller. Clean the roller and scraper.Roller is out of round. Replace roller.Mowing in the same direction. Change mowing direction regularly.Cutting units have too much or too little weight on them. Use weight transfer switch to transfer weight on or off cuttingunits. (Refer to Maintenance Section.)Insufficient engine speed, not set to specification. Check/adjust engine speed. (Refer to Maintenance Section.)Hydraulic system and/or rotary drive motor performance isreduced.Check hydraulic system performance (pump output, motoroperation, valve operation, relief valve settings, etc.).TN015912 QUALITY OF CUT TROUBLESHOOTING
