The manufacturing pro-cesses can cause some areas to rejecttoner. Try a different kind or brand of paper.• Change the printer option and try again. Goto Printing Preferences, click Paper tab,and set type to Thick (See "Opening printingpreferences" on page 50).• If these steps do not correct the problem,contact a service representative.White Spots If white spots appear on the page:• The paper is too rough and a lot of dirt from apaper falls to the inner devices within themachine, so the transfer roller may be dirty.Clean the inside of your machine (See"Cleaning the inside" on page 71).• The paper path may need cleaning (See"Cleaning the inside" on page 71).Vertical lines If black vertical streaks appear on the page:• The surface (drum part) of the imaging unitinside the machine has probably beenscratched. Remove the imaging unit andinstall a new one (See "Replacing the imag-ing unit" on page 97).If white vertical streaks appear on the page:• The surface of the LSU part inside themachine may be dirty (See "Cleaning theinside" on page 71).Color or BlackbackgroundIf the amount of background shading becomesunacceptable:• Change to a lighter weight paper (See "Printmedia specifications" on page 108).• Check the environmental conditions: verydry conditions or a high level of humidity(higher than 80% RH) can increase theamount of background shading.• Remove the old imaging unit and, install anew one (See "Replacing the imaging unit"on page 97). If youstill have the same problem, remove theimaging unit and, install a new one (See"Replacing the imaging unit" on page 97).• Parts of the machine may have toner onthem. If the defects occur on the back of thepage, the problem will likely correct itselfafter a few more pages.• The fusing assembly may be damaged. Con-tact a service representative.Background scat-terABackground scatter results from bits of tonerrandomly distributed on the printed page.• The paper may be too damp. Try printingwith a fresh ream of paper. Do not openreams of paper until necessary so that thepaper does not absorb too much moisture.• If background scatter occurs on an envelope,change the printing layout to avoid printingover areas that have overlapping seams onthe reverse side. Printing on seams cancause problems.• If background scatter covers the entire sur-face area of a printed page, adjust the printresolution through your software applicationor in Printing Preferences (See "Openingprinting preferences" on page 50).Toner particles arearound bold char-acters or picturesThe toner might not adhere properly to this typeof paper.• Change the printer option and try again.Go to the Printing Preferences, click thePaper tab, and set the paper type to Recy-cled.CONDITION SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS
