English 38USING THE ZOOM LENSThis camera is equipped with a unique 6.1 – 17.1 mm zoom lens. This isequivalent to a 37 to 105 mm lens on a 35 mm camera. The lens is operatedby the zoom switch at the back of the camera.The effect of the optical zoom is visible in both the viewfinder and LCDmonitor.To zoom in on the subject, push theright side [T] of the zoom switch 1.To zoom out, push the left side [W] ofthe zoom switch.After zooming, the zoom indicator isbriefly displayed on the LCD monitor toshow the approximate zoom position.The digital-zoom function can increasethe power of the lens. The digital zoomis activated in section 3 of the recordingmenu (page 58).Shooting tipsThe zoom lens not only affects how large the subject is in the picture, but italso influences the depth of field and perspective. Depth of field is the areabetween the closest object in focus and the furthest object in focus. As thelens zooms in to the telephoto position, the depth of field becomes shallower,separating the subject from the background. Many portraits are taken withtelephoto lenses. Zooming the lens out to the wide-angle position makes boththe foreground and background appear sharper. Usually landscapephotographs take advantage of the large depth of field of wide-angle lenses.Wide-angle lenses also create a strong perspective which gives a sense ofdepth in the image. Telephoto lenses compress the space between thesubject and background and create a weak perspective.1Zoom indicator
