61 EnglishRECORDING - ADVANCED OPERATIONWHITE BALANCEWhite balance is the camera’s ability to make different types of lighting appearneutral. The effect is similar to selecting daylight or tungsten film, or usingcolor compensating filters in conventional photography. One automatic andfour preset white-balance settings are available with still image and movierecording; white balance cannot be changed with digital subject programs.White balance is set in section 1 of the still-image recording menu or insection 2 of the movie/audio recording menu (page 57).White balance can be assigned to the controller (page 62). When auto reset(page 63) is active, the white balance is reset to automatic when the camerais turned off.Automatic white balancecompensates for the colortemperature of a scene. In mostcases, the auto setting balancesthe ambient light and createsbeautiful images, even undermixed-lighting conditions. Whenthe built-in flash is used, the whitebalance is set to the colortemperature of the flash.When one of the preset white-balance settings is selected, anindicator is displayed on the LCDmonitor to indicate the activewhite-balance setting; the effect isimmediately visible on the monitor.To record the ambient light, set theflash mode to flash cancel(page 43). The built-in flash canbe used with preset white-balance, but creates a pinkish orblueish cast with the fluorescentand tungsten settings.The flash is daylight balanced andproduces good results with thedaylight and cloudy settings.Daylight - for outdoor andsun-lit subjects.Cloudy - for overcast outdoorscenes.Tungsten - for incandescentlighting: household light bulbs.Fluorescent - for fluorescentlighting: office ceiling lights.
