Turn the fuel tank selector valve to the OFFposition.2. Before removing the fuel filter, clean the areaaround the filter to keep dirt and debris out ofthe engine fuel system.3. Remove the fuel filter and wipe off the filtermounting surface on the engine.4. Install the new fuel filter. Turn the filter untilthe rubber gasket contacts the sealing sur-face, then tighten the filter an additional 1/2 to3/4 turn. Turn fuel tank selector valve ON toone of the fuel tanks.5. Before starting the engine, use the procedureFuel Pump Priming on page 30 for instruc-tions to purge air out of the fuel system.6. Start the engine and check for fuel leaksaround the filter/fuel hose connection used forpriming.Mower BladesMower blades are removed and remounted asde scribed in Sharpen Mower Blades on page63. During the course of sharpening andinspecting mower blades, if there are any of thefollowing conditions of wear or damage, bladesshould be replaced for reasons of safety andperformance of the machine:● An excessive amount of the flat section of theblade has been ground away (removed) whenthe blade is sharpened. Replace the bladewhen less than a 3/4 in. (19 mm) flat sectionremains at the blade tip.● Examine ends of the blade carefully, especiallythe intersection where the flat section of theblade turns up to form the “wing tip” (refer tothe illustration Mower Blade Profile forSharpening on page 64 for location of thewing tip and wear area). Since sand and abra-sive ma terial can wear metal away in this area, the blade should be replaced when metalthickness has worn to 1/16 in. (1.6 mm) orless.DANGERWhen blades are operated over sandy soil, and if blades are allowed to wear, a “slot”may be worn into the wing tip of blade.Eventually a piece of the blade may breakoff creating a serious potential for injury ordamage.● Check the blades for straightness by markingblade tip position inside the deck housing andthen rotating the opposite end of the blade tothe same position and comparing. If the differ-ence in blade tip track is more than 1/8 in. (3mm), the blade is bent and should bereplaced.● Inspect the blade surface, especially in formedareas, for cracks. Replace the blade if anycracks are found.
