Maintenance Instructions CLEANING62NOTE: Use care when cleaning the filter ele-ment. The filter element and/or seal surfacemay be damaged by tapping too hard or hittingon an uneven surface or sharp edge. Washingthe element in water or cleaning solution is notrecommended. Do not try to clean the elementwith compressed air. Remember replacing a fil-ter is less expensive than replacing a dustedengine.4. Use a bright light inside the element to inspectfor damage. Check the element very carefullyfor pin holes or other damage that will allowdirt to leak through the paper media. Replaceelement if necessary.5. Check the condition and resilience of the radialsealing surface (inside of the open end) of thefilter. Replace the filter if any cracks, tears, orother damage to the sealing surface are noted.6. Without removing, visually inspect the conditionof the safety filter for damage or holes. Thesafety filter should only be removed forreplacement yearly (or when dirty or damaged).IMPORTANT: Prior to removing the safety filter, make sure the inside surface of the air cleanercanister is clean. This will minimize the risk ofdirt entering the outlet tube which can cause pre-mature engine wear.7. After removing the safety filter, use a clean, damp cloth and wipe the interior of the air clean-er canister clean. Use special care to cleanboth the inside and outside surfaces of theoutlet tube.IMPORTANT: Any dust left on the inside of theoutlet tube will go into the engine and cause wear.8. Check the outside surface of the outlet tube forsmoothness and cleanness (this is the sealingsurface).9. Insert and seat the safety filter and primary ele-ment carefully into the canister, applying pres-sure at the outer rim of the filter; not at the flex-ible center. Make sure the filter element iscompletely in place before installing the cover.IMPORTANT: DO NOT use the cover latchesto force the filter into the canister -- the covershould fit on with no extra force.NOTE: DO NOT use petroleum based lubri-cants on the sealing surfaces of the filter; usetalcum powder or dry silicone lubricants if re-quired for filter installation.Radial SealingSurfacePrimaryFilter ElementCanisterOutlet TubeSafety FilterAir Filter Element Replacement10.
