Quick Start For SNMP Users 1-15Quick Start For SNMP UsersThis section describes how to get started if youwant to use an SNMP Network Manager tomanage the Switch. It assumes you are alreadyfamiliar with SNMP management.n If you are using IP and you have a BOOTP serverset up correctly on your network, the IP addressfor the Switch is detected automatically and youcan start managing the Switch without any fur-ther configuration.n If you are using the IPX protocol, the Switch1000 is allocated an IPX address automatically.You can start the SNMP Network Manager andbegin managing the Switch.n If you are using IP without a BOOTP server, youmust enter the IP address of the Switch beforethe SNMP Network Manager can communicatewith the device. To do this, refer to “Entering anIP Address for the Switch” below.If you need more information about IP and IPX, referto “Managing Over The Network” on page 3-2.Entering an IP Address for the Switch1 Connect a terminal to the console port of theSwitch 1000, refer to “Connecting a VT100 Termi-nal” on page 2-7. The terminal should be config-ured to 9600 line speed (baud rate), 8 data bits, noparity, and 1 stop bit.2 Press [Return] one or more times until the MainBanner screen appears.3 At the Main Banner screen, press [Return] to dis-play the Logon screen. Log on using the defaultuser name admin (no password is required). SelectOK.4 The Main Menu is displayed. From this menu, selectthe MANAGEMENT SETUP option. The Switch Man-agement Setup screen is displayed.5 On the Management Setup screen, fill in the follow-ing fields:n Device IP Addressn Device SubNet Mask (if necessary)n Default Router (if necessary)For further information on the Management Setupscreen, refer to “Setting Up the Switch for Manage-ment” on page 3-6.6 If you need the Switch 1000 to send SNMP traps tothe Network Manager, you may need to set up theaddress of the Network Manager in the Trap Table.Refer to “Setting Up Traps” on page 4-24.3Com Network Managers such as Transcend Enter-prise Manager for Windows may automatically con-figure the Switch 1000 to send traps to them.Please read the documentation supplied with yournetwork management software.7 When you have finished with the ManagementSetup screen, select OK.
