2 INSTALLATION AND S ETUPThis chapter describes the following:n How to decide where to install the Switch 3800n Ethernet configuration rulesn How to install the Switch in a rack or free-standingn How to connect equipment to the console portn How to check the installation using the Power On Self-Test (POST)Following SafetyInformationBefore installing or removing any components of the Switch, or beforecarrying out any maintenance procedures, you must read the safetyinformation provided in Appendix A of this guide.Determining theSwitch 3800LocationThe Switch 3800 is suited for use in the office, where it can befree-standing or mounted in a standard 19-inch equipment rack.Alternatively, the device can be rack-mounted in a wiring closet orequipment room. Two mounting brackets are supplied with the Switch.CAUTION: When using a rack mounting system, the Switch must bemounted on a shelf or runners. The rack mounting brackets alone arenot sufficient to support the weight of the Switch. The rack mountingbrackets are provided to ensure stability across the horizontal plane. Ifyou stack Switches, you must ensure that the shelf or runners arestrong enough to hold the combined weight. Ensure that theventilation holes are not obstructed.After deciding where to install the Switch, make sure that:n You will be able to meet the configuration rules detailed inChapter 1.n The Switch is accessible and cables can be connected easily.
