6-2 CHAPTER 6: SWITCH FORWARDING DATABASE (FDB)n Permanent entries — Permanent entries are retained in thedatabase if the Switch is reset or a power off/on cycle occurs. Thesystem administrator must make entries permanent. A permanententry can either be a unicast or multicast MAC address. All entriesentered by way of the command-line interface are stored aspermanent. The Switch can support a maximum of 64 permanententries.PACE Prioritization For devices supporting PACE, the Switch 3800 can be configured torecognize PACE modified addresses. When present, the Switch assignsPACE traffic to the high priority queue within the Switch.Recognition of PACE traffic is controlled by the following commands:enable pacedisable paceHow FDB Entries areAddedEntries are added into the FDB in two ways:n The Switch can learn entries. That is, the Switch updates its FDBwith the source MAC address from a packet, the VLAN, and theport identifier on which the source packet is received.n You can enter and update entries using a MIB browser, an SNMPNetwork Manager, or the command-line interface, as described inthe next section.
