Chapter 7: Protecting Your Data ● 88Creating a SnapshotNote: Snapshot is an upgrade feature; if the snapshot feature is locked, see Adding EnhancedFeatures on page 20 for information on purchasing a feature key.Snapshots are only supported on Windows and Linux operating systems.A snapshot is a frozen image of a logical drive at a particular point in time. You can copy thedata on one logical drive to another logical drive by creating a snapshot. You may want to dothis if you want to back up your data to tape, clone a drive, or copy the data to multiple servers. There are two snapshot options:● Snapshot Backup—Copies all data on a logical drive so that it can be moved from oneserver to another. See page 89.● Snapshot Nobackup—Creates a temporary copy of a logical drive for tape backup andreference (uses less system resources than Snapshot Backup). See page 89.To delete an existing snapshot, see page 90.Snapshot Limitations● You can create a snapshot on systems running Windows or Linux only.● You can create a snapshot of only one controller at a time; you can’t create a snapshot thatincludes multiple controllers.● The source logical drive (the logical drive that you’re copying) and the target logical drive(the logical drive that you’re copying to) must be on the same controller.● The source and target logical drives may have the same or different RAID levels.● You can create up to four snapshots on each controller.● The size of the target logical drive must be greater than or equal to the size of the sourcelogical drive.● You can’t take a snapshot of a booted operating system volume.● You can’t modify any information on a snapshot.
