Shifting Into PARK (P)(Automatic Transmission){CAUTION:It can be dangerous to get out of your vehicle ifthe shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with theparking brake firmly set. Your vehicle can roll.If you have left the engine running, the vehiclecan move suddenly. You or others could beinjured. To be sure your vehicle will not move,even when you are on fairly level ground, usethe steps that follow. If you are pulling a trailer,see Towing a Trailer on page 4-29.Use this procedure to shift into PARK (P):1. Hold the brake pedal down with your right foot andset the parking brake.See Parking Brake on page 2-43 for moreinformation.2. Move the shift lever into PARK (P) by holding in thebutton on the shift lever and pushing the lever allthe way toward the front of the vehicle.3. Turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF.4. For vehicles with key access, remove the key andtake it with you. If you can leave your vehicle withthe ignition key in your hand, your vehicle is inPARK (P). Vehicles with the keyless access system,take the keyless access transmitter with you.Leaving Your Vehicle With the EngineRunning (Automatic Transmission){CAUTION:It can be dangerous to leave your vehicle withthe engine running. Your vehicle could movesuddenly if the shift lever is not fully inPARK (P) with the parking brake firmly set.And, if you leave the vehicle with the enginerunning, it could overheat and even catch fire.You or others could be injured. Do not leaveyour vehicle with the engine running.If you have to leave your automatic transmission vehiclewith the engine running, be sure your vehicle is inPARK (P) and your parking brake is firmly set beforeyou leave it.
