BigIron RX Series Configuration Guide 30153-1002253-01Configuring super aggregated VLANs 11The specifies a VLAN group. If you do not use this parameter, the configurationinformation for all the configured VLAN groups is displayed.Configuring super aggregated VLANsA super aggregated VLAN allows multiple VLANs to be placed within another VLAN. This featureallows you to construct Layer 2 paths and channels. A path contains multiple channels, each ofwhich is a dedicated circuit between two end points. The two devices at the end points of thechannel appear to each other to be directly attached. The network that connects them istransparent to the two devices. You can aggregate up to 4089 VLANs within another VLAN. This provides a total VLAN capacity onone device of 16,760,836 channels (4089 * 4089).The devices connected through the channel are not visible to devices in other channels. Therefore, each client has a private link to the other side of the channel.Super aggregated VLANs are useful for applications such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) in whichyou need to provide a private, dedicated Ethernet connection to individual clients to transparentlyreach its subnet across multiple networks. The feature allows point-to-point and point-to-multipointconnections.Figure 23 shows a conceptual picture of the service that aggregated VLANs provide.FIGURE 23 Conceptual model of the super aggregated VLAN applicationClient 1 Client 3 Client 5. . . . . .Client 1192.168.1.69/24Path = a single VLAN into whichclient VLANs are aggregatedChannel = a client VLAN nestedinside a Pathsub-net192.168.1.0/24
