5EnglishHotplate BurnersThe drawing below each knob indicates which burnerthat knob controls. There is a spark ignition system thatworks when the knob is pressed in. Each burner alsohas a special safety device that stops the flow of gas ifthe flame goes out.Push in and turn aknob to the large flamesymbol ( ).Keep holding the knobpressed in to let the gasthrough to the burner forfew seconds. The igniterwill spark and light thegas automatically.Keep holding the knob pressed in to let the gas throughto the burner for few seconds. The igniter should sparkand light the gas.If, when you let go of the control knob, the burner goesout, the safety device has not held in. Turn the control tothe off position and wait one minute, then try again thistime holding in the control knob for slightly longer.Adjust the flame height to suit by turning the knob.The small fl ame marks the ‘low position’.Turn the knob towards it after the contents of a pan haveboiled.Make sure flames are under the pans. Using a lid willhelp the contents boil more quickly.Pans and kettles with concave bases or down turnedbase rims should not be used.Simmering aids, such as asbestos or mesh mats,are NOT recommended. They will reduce burnerperformance and could damage the pan supports.Avoid using unstable and misshapen pans that may tilteasily and pans with a very small base diameter e.g.milk pans, single egg poachers.Mimimum pan sizesThe minimum pan diameter recommended is 120mm forthe outer burners and 160mm for the centre burner..When hotplate control knob is pressed in, sparks will bemade at every burner, this is normal.If after lighting, a hotplate burner’s fl ame goes out, turn itoff and leave it for one minute before relighting it.You can remove the burner head for cleaning, see page‘Cleaning your cooker’.You should wipe the top surface of the cooker aroundthe hotplate burners as soon as possible after spillsoccur. Try to wipe them off while the hotplate is stillwarm.Note:Use of aluminium pans may cause metallic marking ofthe pan supports. This does not affect the durability ofthe enamel and may be cleaned off with a proprietarymetal polish.
