24On the STEREO menu, the choicesmade with the ‹/› Buttons o onthe remote may either turn the surroundprocessing off for a traditional two-channel stereo presentation, or select5 STEREO or 7 STEREO depend-ing on whether the 5.1 or 6.1/7.1 outputis in use. The latter modes feed a two-channel presentation to all speakers, regardless of the number of speakers inuse. See page 34 for a complete explana-tion of the 5 Stereo and 7 Stereo modes. After the selections are made on theDolby, DTS, Logic 7, DSP (Surround) orStereo menus, press the ⁄/¤ Buttonsn so that the cursor moves to theBACK TO MASTER MENU lineand press the Set Button p.Speaker SetupThis menu tells the AVR580 which typeof speakers are in use. This is importantas it adjusts the settings that decidewhether your system will use the“5-channel” or “6-channel/7-channel”modes, as well as determining whichspeakers receive low-frequency (bass)information. For each of these settings, use theLARGE setting if the speakers for aparticular position are traditional full-range loudspeakers. Use the SMALLsetting for smaller, frequency-limitedsatellite speakers that do not reproducesounds below 200Hz. Note that when“small” speakers are used, a subwooferis required to reproduce low-frequencysounds. Remember that the “large” and“small” descriptions do not refer to theactual physical size of the speakers, butto their ability to reproduce low-frequencysounds. If you are in doubt as to whichcategory describes your speakers, consultthe specifications in the speakers’owner’s manual, or ask your dealer. This menu screen also allows you toenter the settings for the AVR580’s TripleCrossover feature, which allows a differ-ent crossover point to be used for thefront left/right, center and surroundspeakers. In systems where full-range ortower speakers are used for the frontsoundstage or where different modelsare in use at the various speaker posi-tions, this feature allows you to cus-tomize the bass management and redi-rection circuits with a precision not previ-ously possible. The factory default settings are “small”for the front left and right, center, andsurround left and right speakers, with asubwoofer automatically enabled. If yoursystem includes a 5.1 speaker systemwith smaller satellites for all channelsand a subwoofer, then you do not need toconfigure your speakers and you may skipthe rest of this section at this time.It is easiest to enter the proper set-tings for speaker setup through theSPEAKER SETUP menu (Figure 5).If that menu is not already on your screenfrom the prior adjustments, press the OSDButton v to bring up the MASTERMENU (Figure 1), and then press the ¤Button n until the cursor is on theSPEAKER SETUP line. At thispoint, press the Set Button p to bringup the SPEAKER SETUP menu(Figure 5).Figure 5The first line of the SPEAKERSETUP menu (Figure 5) allows you toswitch the menu to change either theunderlying speaker size setting or theexact crossover point used for that speakergroup. For the first pass through themenu, leave the setting at its defaultoption of SIZE, and then proceed asoutlined below. Once the speaker choiceshave been set, you may wish to return tothis line to change the option so that thecrossover settings may be adjusted.Begin the speaker setup process by mak-ing certain that the cursor is pointingtoward the LEFT/RIGHT line, whichsets the configuration for the front left andright speakers. If you wish to make achange to the front speakers’ configura-tion, press the ‹/› Buttons oso that either LARGE or SMALLappears, matching the appropriate descrip-tion from the definitions shown above. When SMALL is selected, low-frequency sounds will be sent only to thesubwoofer output. If you choose this optionand there is no subwoofer connected, youwill not hear any low-frequency soundsfrom the front channels. When LARGE is selected, a full-rangeoutput will be sent to the front left andfront right outputs. Depending on thechoice made in the SUBWOOFER linein this menu, bass information may alsobe directed to the front left/right speakers,a subwoofer or both.NOTE: When the front speakers are setto the LARGE option and the surroundmode is set to "Surround Off", or pure two-channel stereo, when an analog signalsource is present it will be routed directlyfrom the input to the volume control with-out being digitized or processed. If youhave full-range front speakers and wish toremove all digital processing from the cir-cuit path, select this configuration. If youwish to set this option for use with onlyone input, such as a CD player that usesan external DAC or an optional, externalphono preamp, you may also wish tochoose the INDEPENDENT settingon the BASS MGR line at the bottomof this menu so that only those inputswhere the analog bypass is desired will berouted in this fashion, while other analoginputs such as a VCR or cable box will bedigitized for surround processing. When you have completed your selectionfor the front channel, press the ¤ Buttonn on the remote to move the cursor toCENTER.Press the ‹/› Buttons o onthe remote to select the option that bestdescribes your system, based on the speakerdefinitions shown below. When SMALL is selected, low-frequencycenter channel sounds will be sent only tothe subwoofer output. If you choose thisoption and there is no subwoofer con-nected, you will not hear low-frequencysounds from the center channel. When LARGE is selected, a full-rangeoutput will be sent to the center speakeroutput, and NO center channel signal willbe sent to the subwoofer output.NOTE: If you choose Logic 7 as the sur-round mode for the particular inputsource for which you are configuring yourspeakers, the AVR580 will not make the“large” option available for the centerspeaker. This is due to the requirementsof Logic 7 processing, and does not indi-cate a problem with your receiver.3737* S P E A K E R S E T U P *M O D E : S I Z E X - O V E RL E F T / R I G H T : L A R G EC E N T E R : S M A L LS U R R O U N D : S M A L LS U R R B A C K : S M A L LS U B W O O F E R : S U B ( L F E )B A S S M G R : G L O B A LB A C K T O M A S T E R M E N U37
