30OPERATIONBasic OperationOnce you have completed the initial setupand configuration of the AVR580, it is sim-ple to operate and enjoy. The followinginstructions will help you maximize theenjoyment of your new receiver:Turning the AVR580 On or Off• When using the AVR580 for the firsttime, you must press the Main PowerSwitch 1 on the front panel to turn theunit on. This places the unit in a Standbymode, as indicated by the red color ofthe Power Indicator 3. Once the unitis in Standby, you may begin a listeningsession by pressing the System PowerControl 2 on the front panel, or thePower On Button d or AVRSelector f on the remote. ThePower Indicator 3 will turn orange.This will turn the unit on and return it tothe input source that was last used. Theunit may also be turned on from Standbyby pressing any of the Input SelectorButtons eg ç∂ on theremote or the Input Source SelectorButton % on the front panel.NOTE: After pressing one of the InputSelector Buttons eg to turn theunit on, press the AVR Selector f toset the remote control to the AVR580functions.To turn the unit off at the end of a listen-ing session, simply press the SystemPower Control 2 on the front panel orthe Power Off Button aå on theremote. The Power Indicator 3 willturn red.When the remote is used to turn the unit“off” it is actually placing the system in aStandby mode, as indicated by the redcolor of the Power Indicator 3.• To program the AVR580 for automaticturn-off, press the Sleep Button jon the remote. Each press of the buttonwill decrease the time before shut-downin the following sequence:The sleep time will be displayed in theLower Display Line B and it will countdown until the time has elapsed.When the programmed sleep time haselapsed, the unit will automatically turnoff. The front-panel display will dim toone-half brightness when the Sleep func-tion is programmed. To cancel the Sleepfunction, press and hold the SleepButtonj until the information displayreturns to normal brightness; the Sleepindicator numbers will disappear and thewords SLEEP OFF will appear in theLower Display Line B.When you will be away from home for anextended period of time it is always agood idea to completely turn the unit offwith the front-panel Main PowerSwitch 1.NOTE: All preset memories are lost if theunit is left turned off by using the MainPower Switch 1 for more than twoweeks.Source Selection• To select a source, press any of theInput Selector Buttons egç∂ on the remote.• The input source may also be changedby pressing the front-panel InputSource Selector Button %. Eachpress of the button will move the inputselection through the list of availableinputs.• As the input is changed, the AVR580will automatically switch to the digitalinput (if selected), surround mode,speaker configuration, output levels,crossover frequency and night modestatus that were entered during theconfiguration process for that source.• The front-panel Video 4 Inputs (Ó,Optical 3 Digital Input & or theCoaxial 3 Digital Input * may beused to connect a device such as a videogame or camcorder to your home enter-tainment system on a temporary basis.• As the input source is changed, thenew input name will appear momentar-ily as an on-screen display in the lowerthird of the video display. The inputname will also appear in the MainInformation Display ˜ and theselected input’s name will light inorange in the front-panel InputIndicators ˆ.• When an audio source is selected, thelast video input used remains routed tothe Video 1/Video 2 Outputs fi‡and Video Monitor Outputs ¤. Thispermits simultaneous viewing and lis-tening to different sources.• When a composite or S-Video source isselected, the video signal for that inputwill be routed to the Video MonitorOutput ¤ and may be viewed on a TVmonitor connected to the AVR580.6-Channel/8-Channel Direct Input• There are two input choices availablefor use with sources such as a DVD-Audio or SACD player that are connectedto the 8-Channel Direct Inputs .Select the appropriate input accordingto the way your system and sourceequipment is configured:■ 6 CH DIRECT should be usedwhen the SBR and SBL inputs areNOT in use. It is assumed that theinput source device has its own inter-nal bass management system. Thisinput passes the input from thesource directly through to the volumecontrol without any analog to digitalconversion and it mutes the unusedinput jacks to prevent unwantednoise from interfering with systemperformance.■ 8 CH DIRECT should be usedwhen an input is connected to alleight 8-Channel Direct Inputs .It is assumed that the input sourcedevice has its own internal bass man-agement system. This input passesthe input from the source directlythrough to the volume control withoutany analog-to-digital conversion andit mutes the unused input jacks toprevent unwanted noise from inter-fering with system performance.Volume Control• Adjust the volume to a comfortablelevel using the front-panel VolumeControl ı or remote VolumeUp/Down Buttons .• To temporarily silence all speakeroutputs, press the Mute ButtonK . This will interrupt the output to allspeakers and the headphone jack, but itwill not affect any recording or dubbingthat may be in progress. When the sys-tem is muted, the word MUTE willflash in the Main InformationDisplay ˜.
