It is particularly important for adigital receiver such as the AVR580, ascorrect outputs ensure that you hearsoundtracks with the proper directionalityand intensity.IMPORTANT NOTE: Listeners are oftenconfused about the operation of the sur-round channels. While some assume thatsound should always be coming fromeach speaker, most of the time there willbe little or no sound in the surroundchannels. This is because they are onlyused when a movie director or soundmixer specifically places sound there tocreate ambience or a special effect, orto continue action from the front of theroom to the rear. When the output levelsare properly set, it is normal for sur-round speakers to operate only occa-sionally. Artificially increasing the vol-ume to the rear speakers may destroythe illusion of an enveloping sound fieldthat duplicates the way you hear sound ina movie theater or concert hall. Before beginning the output level adjust-ment process, make certain that allspeaker connections have been properlymade. The system volume should be setto the level that you will use during a typ-ical listening session. While the AVR580allows you to set output levels manually,we recommend that the EzSet system beused when the AVR is first installed, toestablish the initial level settings.Using EzSetJBL’s EzSet remote makes it possible toquickly and accurately set the AVR580’soutput levels without the use of a soundpressure meter, although manual adjust-ment is also available. However, for theeasiest setup, follow these steps whileseated in the listening position that willbe used most often:1. Make certain that all speaker posi-tions have been properly configuredfor their “large” or “small” settings(as outlined above) and turn off theOSD system if it is in use.2. Adjust the volume so that it is at-10dB, as shown in the on-screendisplay or Main InformationDisplay ˜.3. Hold the remote in front of you atarm’s length, being sure not to coverthe EzSet Sensor Microphoneat the top of the remote.4. Press and hold the SPL SelectorButton for three seconds.Release it when the Program/SPLIndicator c stops flashing andremains lit. Within five seconds, press the 5 Button r on theremote if your system is configuredfor 5.1 operation with standardspeakers or the 7 Button r on theremote if your system is configuredfor 6.1/7.1 operation with a fullspeaker complement including bothrear surround speakers. Once the cor-rect channel configuration button hasbeen pressed, the test noise will beheard from the front left speaker.5. At this point, EzSet will take over, adjusting the output level of eachchannel so that when the process iscomplete, all levels will be equal andat the set reference point. Thisprocess may take a few minutes, depending on the extent of adjust-ment required.6. During the adjustment, you will seethe location of the channel positionbeing adjusted appear in the on-screen display (if connected) and inthe Main Information Display ˜,alternating with a readout of the out-put setting, relative to the referencelevel, and in the Speaker/ChannelInput Indicators E where the let-ters for the channel being adjustedwill flash to indicate the channelfrom which the test tone should beheard. As the adjustment proceeds,a few things will happen simul-taneously:• The channel position being adjustedwill flash in the Speaker/ChannelInput Indicators E. If the testnoise is heard from a channel otherthan the one shown in the indica-tor, there is an error in the speakerconnections. If this is the case, press the Test Button i TWICEto stop the adjustment. Then, turnthe unit off and verify that allspeakers are connected to theproper Outputs §¶ª‚.41443637373737
