When you press any one of the selec-tors, it will briefly flash in red to indicatethat you have changed the device beingcontrolled. When operating a device other than theAVR580, the controls may not correspondexactly to the function printed on theremote or button. Some commands, suchas the volume control, are the same asthey are with the AVR580. Other buttonswill change their function so that theycorrespond to a secondary label on theremote. For example, the Sleep andSurround mode selector buttons also func-tion as the Channel Up and Channel Downbuttons when operating most TV sets,VCRs or cable boxes. The Channel Up/Down indication is printed directly on theremote. For many standard CD players, cassette decks, VCRs and DVD functions, the standard function icons are printed ontop of the buttons. For some products, however, the functionof a particular button does not follow thecommand printed on the remote. In orderto see which function a button controls, consult the Function List tables on pages46 and 47. To use those tables, firstcheck the type of device being controlled(e.g., TV, VCR). Next, look at the remotecontrol diagram in Figure 12. Note thateach button has a number on it.To find out what function a particular but-ton has for a specific device, find the but-ton number on the Function List and thenlook in the column for the device you arecontrolling. For example, button number45 is the Direct button for the AVR580,but it is the “Favorite” button for manycable television boxes and satellitereceivers. Button number 31 is theDelay button for the AVR580, but theOpen/Close button for CD players.NOTE: The numbers used to describethe button functions in Figure 12 for thepurposes of describing how a buttonoperates are a different set of numbersthan those used in the rest of this manualto describe the button functions for theAVR580.314331434343433143
