It is particularly important for a DolbyDigital receiver such as the DCR600II, as correctoutputs will ensure that you hear soundtracks intheir proper place with the proper directionalityand intensity.IMPORTANT NOTE: Listeners are oftenconfused about the operation of the surroundchannels. While some assume that soundshould always be coming from each speaker, most of the time there will be little or no soundin the surround channels. This is because theyare only used when a movie director or soundmixer specifically places sound there to createambience or a special effect, or to continueaction from the front of the room to the rear. When the output levels are properly set, it isnormal for surround speakers to operate onlyoccasionally. Artificially increasing the volumeto the rear speakers may destroy the illusion ofan enveloping sound field that duplicates theway you hear sound in a movie theater or con-cert hall. Before beginning the adjustment process, makecertain that all speaker connections have beenproperly made. The system volume should beset to the level that you will use during a typicallistening session. The Bass and Treble controlsshould be set to 0dB, or press the Tone ModeButton 6 to disable them. When only the centericon box containing the abbreviation for thespeaker position is lit, the speaker is set for“Small.” When the inner box and the two outerboxes are lit, the speaker is set for “Large.”When no indicator appears at a speakerlocation, that position is set for “None” or“No” speaker. For example, in the following figure, the frontleft and front right speakers are set for LARGE,the center, surround left (SL) and surround right(SR) speakers are set for SMALL, and asubwoofer is set, as shown by the box withthe abbreviation “LFE”, which stands for“low-frequency effects.”To adjust and calibrate the output levels, followthese steps.
