However, the digital signals will be passedthrough to the Digital Audio Output ¡.PCM Audio PlaybackPCM (Pulse Code Modulation) is the noncom-pressed digital audio system used for compactdiscs and laser discs. The digital circuits in theDCR600II are capable of high-quality digital-to-ana-log decoding, and they may be connected directlyto the digital audio output of your CD player.Connections may be made to the rear panelOptical or Coaxial Inputs ™£.To listen to a PCM digital source, first select theinput for the desired source (e.g., CD). Next pressthe Digital Select Button * and thenuse the ⁄/¤ Buttons y on the remote,or the Selector Buttons 5 on the front panel,until the desired digital input choice, e.g.COAX 2 or OPTICAL 1, appears in theMain Information Display U.When a PCM source is playing, the PCMIndicator A will light. During PCM playback,you may select any surround mode exceptDolby Digital or DTS.Playback from PCM sources may also benefitfrom the Logic 7 mode. When playing back asurround-encoded PCM source, such as a sur-round-encoded CD, use the Logic 7 C (or Cinema)mode. When playing true stereo recordings, usethe Logic 7 M (or Music) mode for a widersoundstage and increased rear-channel ambience.Similarly, the Dolby Pro Logic II modes may alsoincrease your enjoyment of PCM and analogsources. Choose the Music mode for stereorecordings. For surround-encoded sources, youmay choose either the Emulation mode or theMovies mode, which more closely re-creates aDolby Digital sound field with discrete informa-tion provided to the surround channels.With the great variety of surround modes avail-able on the DCR600II receiver, you are encour-aged to experiment to find the modes that suityour tastes, as well as different modes depend-ing on the source material.Operating the TunerThe tuner of the DCR600II is capable of tuningAM, FM and FM Stereo broadcast stations.Stations may be tuned manually, or they may bestored as favorite station presets and recalledfrom a 30-position memory.Station Selection1. Press the AM/FM Tuner Select Button kon the remote to select the tuner as an input.The tuner may be selected from the front panelby either pressing the Input Source Selector! until the tuner is active or by pressing theTuner Band Selector 9 at any time.2. Press the AM/FM Tuner Select Button kor Tuner Band Selector 9 again to switchbetween AM and FM so that the desiredfrequency band is selected.3. Press the FM Mode Button @ to selectmanual or automatic tuning.When the AUTO Indicator T is illuminated inthe Main Information Display U the tunerwill stop only at those stations that have a signalstrong enough to be received with acceptablequality.When the AUTO Indicator T is not illuminated,the tuner is in a manual mode and will stop ateach frequency increment in the selected band.Press and hold the Tuning Selector Button 8to search more quickly.4. To select stations, press the Tuning SelectorButton 8 . When the AUTOIndicator T is lit, press the button for twoseconds and then release to cause the tuner tosearch for the next highest- or lowest-frequencystation that has an acceptable signal. Whentuning FM stations in the Auto mode, the tunerwill select only stereo stations. To tune to thenext station, press the button again. If theSTEREO Indicator R is not lit, tap the TuningSelector Button 8 to advance onefrequency increment at a time, or press and holdit to locate a specific station. When the TUNEDIndicator S lights, the station is properlytuned and should be heard with clarity.5. Stations may also be tuned directly by press-ing the Direct Button , and then pressingthe Numeric Keys – thatcorrespond to the station’s frequency. Thedesired station will automatically be tuned. Ifyou press an incorrect button while entering adirect frequency, press the Clear Buttonto start over.NOTE: When the FM reception of a station isweak, audio quality will be increased by switchingto Mono mode by pressing the FM ModeButton @ until the STEREO IndicatorR goes out.Preset TuningUsing the remote, up to 30 stations may bestored in the receiver’s memory for easy recallusing the front panel controls or the remote.To enter a station into the memory, first tune thestation using the steps outlined above. Then:1. Press the Memory Button on theremote. Note that the MEMORY Indicator Qwill be illuminated and flash in the MainInformation Display (.2. Within five seconds, press the NumericKeys – corresponding to thelocation where you wish to store this station’sfrequency. Once entered, the preset number willappear in the Preset Number/Sleep TimerDisplay N.3. Repeat the process after tuning any additionalstations to be preset.Recalling Preset Stations• To manually select a station previouslyentered in the preset memory, press theNumeric Keys – thatcorrespond to the desired station’s memorylocation.• To manually tune through the list of storedpreset stations one by one, press the PresetStations Selector Buttons ) onthe front panel or remote.Tape RecordingIn normal operation, the audio or video sourceselected for listening through the DCR600II issent to the record outputs. This means that anyprogram you are watching or listening to may berecorded simply by placing machines connectedto the outputs for Tape Outputs ¶ or Video 1Outputs ›fi in the Record mode.When a digital audio recorder is connected tothe Digital Audio Output ¡, you are able torecord the digital signal using a CD-R, MiniDiscor other digital recording system.NOTES:• The digital outputs are active only when adigital signal is present, and they do notconvert an analog input to a digital signal,or change the format of the digital signal.In addition, the digital recorder must becompatible with the output signal.
