DVDAUDIO has been desired to provide even higher audioquality than DVD VIDEO by using high-bit, highsampling rate processing.VIDEO CD (VCD) : This is a CD containing movingpicture. By compressing video data to about 1/120 andaudio data to about 1/6, a 12 cm disc with the same sizeas ordinary music CD can store moving pictures andaudio for up to about 74 minutes. The VCD includes the P.B.C.-incompatible discs with onlythe playback capability (Version 1.1) and P.B.C.-compatible discs with the menu playback and specialplayback capabilities (Version 2.0)MPEG (Moving Picture Expert Group) (DVD, VCD) :A digital video and audio compression anddecompression system which is standardized as aninternational standard.Decoder : A device for restoring standard audio signalfrom audio data recorded based on coding into DVDdata, etc. This processing is referred to as decoding.Downmixing : Conversion of multichannel audiosignals of DVD or DTS-CD into 2-channel stereo signals.Sampling rate : Sampling refers to converting an analogsignal into digital signal by slicing the analog signal intofine parts at a certain time interval and digitizing everysliced part. The sampling rate is the count of slicing persecond. The original sound can be reproduced morefaithfully when the sampling rate is higher.Quantization bit : The quantization bit count refers tothe number used in digitizing the sliced parts obtainedby slicing the analog signal as described above. Thequantization bit count is the number of bits used indigitization per second. The original sound can bereproduced more faithfully when the quantization bitcount is larger.Linear PCM (Pulse Code Modulation): Audio signalformat without using compression. In the DVD whichhas a very large disc capacity, the linear PCM signal usinghigh sampling rate can be recorded.Packed PCM : The packed PCM (P.PCM) signal isobtained by compressing the linear PCM signal featuringlarge data amount and high sampling rate. With thiscompression, the signal before compression can berestored perfectly.Bitstream (DVD) : This is the generic name given forthe flow of data based on a standard such as DolbyDigital, DTS, MPEG, etc.Dolby Digital : A digital audio compression technologydeveloped by Dolby Laboratories, Inc. It is compatiblewith 5.1-channel surround audio as well as 2-channelstereo, and capable of recording a large amount of audiodata efficiently in a disc.DTS : Digital surround system developed by DigitalTheater Systems, Inc.Title/Title No. (DVD VIDEO) : The title is the largestunit of video or audio recorded in DVD VIDEO. Usually,a title corresponding to a movie product with videosoftware or an album (or a piece of music) with musicsoftware. The numbers assigned to the titles are referredto as title numbers.Chapter/Chapter No. (DVD VIDEO) : The chapter is apartition of video or audio that is smaller than the title.A title is composed of multiple chapters. The numbersassigned to the chapters are referred to as chapternumbers.Group/Group No. (DVD AUDIO) : The group is thelargest unit of the contents in DVD AUDIO. Usually, agroup corresponds to an album. The numbers assignedto the groups are referred to as group numbers.Track/Track No. (DVD AUDIO, VCD, CD) : The trackis a partition of audio (such as a piece of music or musicchapter) in a disc. These partitions are numbered andthe numbers are referred to as track numbers. While atrack usually corresponds to a piece of music with DVDAUDIO or ordinary music CD, the partitions of contentsand track numbers are not always corresponding withVCD. As a result, while all of the playback operationsincluding track skipping and programming of ordinarymusic CD are based on the track number information, such operations may sometimes be unavailable withVCD.AVTT (Audio Video Title): Part of DVD AUDIO thatcontains moving pictures. The audio language, subtitlelanguage and viewing angles in this part can be switchedby the user.AOTT (Audio Only Title): Part of DVD AUDIO thatcontains audio and still pictures. The audio language andstill pictures in this part can be switched by the user.Subtitle language (DVD): Some DVDs contain therecording of multiple subtitle languages. This playerallows the user to select desired one of the recordedsubtitle languages during playback of such a DVD.Angle (DVD): Some DVDs contain the recording ofmultiple viewing angles. This player allows the user toselect desired one of the recorded angles during playbackof such a DVD.
