OfficeServ 7400 INSTALLATIONTECHNICAL MANUAL PART 4 MAY 20104.1PART 4. CONNECTING EXTERNAL BATTERIESThis section describes how to connect external batteries to the OfficeServ 7400 system.4.1 CONNECTING EXTERNAL BATTERIESCAUTIONS FOR CONNECTING EXTERNAL BATTERIESExternal batteries are required to maintain stable operation of the OfficeServ 7400 system incase a power failure occurs. Rated capacity of an external battery is DC 48V and 45AH (amphours) per cabinet. Batteries should be connected to each cabinet to guarantee back-uppower. A fuse (125VAC, 5A) should be positioned between the output terminal of the batteryand the cabinet.Cautions for connecting external batteriesDo not connect external AC power to the system before completing the connectionbetween batteries and the system. If so, it may cause electric shock Check thespecified polarity (+ or -) to connect external batteries. To reduce risk of fire and injury to persons, use only a sealed nickel cadmium or lead-acid battery supply capable of handling a charge current of 0.45A, a charge voltageof -56VDC and a discharge rate of 45AH.The power supply provides -56VDC at 0.4A charging current (i.e. when AC power is present)which allows for float charging from OfficeServ 7400 to emergency backup batteries. TheOfficeServ 7400 can also run without AC power on a -48VDC battery system or rectifier. Thereshould be no more than a 0.5VDC drop in voltage from the OfficeServ 7400 and the batteries.Ensure polarity prior to connecting the external -48VDC power source to the system. The OfficeServ 7400 power supplies contain a monitoring circuit to switch the system tocustomer provided 48VDC batteries when AC power in interrupted. Calls in progress are notdisconnected. The power supply circuitry monitors and recharges batteries as needed.Connect four 12V batteries or eight 6V batteries in series. Any NICAD or lead acid (car ormotorcycle type) battery can be used if its rating is not less than 6AH but no more than 40AHper power supply. The batteries must be located within three feet of the KSU. Use the factory-supplied wire harness with 36” white and black leads to connect batteries (see Figures 4.1 and4.2).
